BOYNTON WOMAN’S CLUB RECEIVES STATE SPECIAL CATEGORY
GRANT
The Boynton Woman’s Club was
recently awarded a state special category grant through the Florida Division of
Historic Resources to fund the repair and restoration of the windows and doors
in its historic clubhouse. The state
will provide $140,000 with a match of $50,000 from the Boynton Beach CRA and
$10,000 from donations. All contracts
will be awarded through a competitive process, and the details of the project
will be determined with the selected architect.
“I would
like to thank all of our state and local representatives and the many friends
of the Boynton Woman’s Club who wrote letters in support for our building’s
restoration. In addition, none of this would have been possible without the
assistance and support of the Boynton Beach CRA, its Commission, and the Mayor
of Boynton Beach.,” said Dr. Michele Walter, Boynton Woman’s Club
president. “This money will allow us to
continue with restoration, but much more work needs to be done to bring our
building back to its former glory.”
Boynton
Woman’s Club members Pat Waldron and Barbara Wineberg, with the assistance of
Warren Adams, the Boynton Beach Historic Planner, prepared and submitted the
application. “It was a huge job but all
our hard work paid off when we heard we’d been awarded the grant,” said
Waldron. “In the summer of 2014, we
completed the emergency restoration of several French doors and transoms in the
second floor ballroom and this special category grant will enable us to
continue this restoration project. As with the first project, the building will
remain open during the restoration and there will be no disruption to scheduled
events.”
Opened
in 1926, the Boynton Woman’s Club is one of only a few Addison Mizner-designed
structures that is available for public use in Palm Beach County. The building stands as a testament to the
historic heritage of Florida as well as to the unique architectural style and
superior craftsmanship from that era.
The
Boynton Woman’s Club is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that has
supported and impacted the lives of people in the community for over 105
years. Its influence on the city dates
back to 1909 when a group of civic minded women organized a club with the
purpose of contributing to the welfare and civic growth of Boynton. Both as a historic landmark and for support
of local charities, the club continues to be an important part of the
community.
